How to Find the Best Skincare Products for Kids with Sensitive Skin

Parenting is hard, there is no getting past it. What makes parenting even harder is having additional challenges to overcome, such as sensitive skin on our kids! Having sensitive skin can lead to more pain for our children due to various rashes and allergies, which leads to lots of time spent discovering ways to help our kiddos, as well as a lot of trial-and-error. Here are some ideas to find the best skincare for your little’s sensitive skin:

Pay attention to the ingredients!

Ingredients are key! The kinds of ingredients in a product is the difference between a product being helpful or harmful. The best skincare ingredients for sensitive skin are gentle but effective ingredients that come from nature; ingredients you can likely pronounce and would see in a garden. In contrast, most products on the shelf these days contain chemicals you can’t pronounce and don’t know what they are there for, and may even have other residual toxins in them. These chemicals and toxins can be harsh and irritating on sensitive skin, and could make the problem worse. Be sure to find a product with fewer ingredients, because the ones with longer ingredient lists tend to add in extra preservatives and fragrances that do more harm than good.

Best natural ingredients

Now that we’ve established natural is better for our kid’s needs, here are some of the best natural ingredients for sensitive skin:

Olive oil - helps soothe discomfort and inflammation, and is a great moisturizer

Eucalyptus - immune-boosting, helps to retain moisture in skin,

St. John’s Wort - helps speed healing, kills microorganisms, and is anti-inflammatory

Chickweed herb - soothes pain and inflammation, contains antioxidants

Calendula (marigold) - antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, soothing

Arnica flower - helps with pain relief, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal

These natural ingredients are all gentle but effective when used correctly! While you could figure out a way to use each of these individually on your child’s sensitive skin, we’ve bundled them up for you in an easy balm, ready to be swiped on when the need arises. Check out our Don’t Be Rash Diaper Balm, or our All Over Balm to find helpful, natural ingredients to soothe that sensitive skin.

Look online and in niche stores

The big box stores are starting to carry more “natural” products from big brands, but even though many big brands might tout that they have more “natural” products, many of the big brands still produce in mass batches, leading to lower quality product ingredients and the need to add preservatives. They also typically still contain chemicals and fragrances that can be harmful. Instead of heading to a big box store, smaller, niche, natural food stores tend to carry products that are from smaller brands with better quality products. Plus, the people who work there tend to be knowledgeable about natural alternatives for health issues. Heading to your local natural store could end up being fruitful. If you’d rather stay home, you can also look online for products with ingredients for sensitive skin! Check out reviews and ingredients on products, and order a couple to see how they help. Happy natural ingredient hunting!
